For years, illuminated manuscripts have been captivating to me. Although I am drawn to the intricate illustrations and goofy-looking people, theĀ part that always fascinated me the most was the impressive typographic forms. It is evident that each letter was painstakingly made, consistent in form, weight, and precision.
As I have studied blackletter, in it's variety of interpretations, from its original iterations deriving from calligraphic text from the Middle East 2,000 years ago to its the refined monoline versions today, I have been inspired to learn and recreate the type in various ways, both as an appreciation as well as a creative exercise.
